Why and Story
People's Documentary is the idea that we can make videos about issues whether they be perceived as small or big and make them powerful through documentary. As my thesis (Being an on-going web-documentary series) in Humber this gave me a chance to fully explore my passion for social cause driven material and to express my artistic intuition in terms of story-telling, editing and music. Obay, my friend, producer and cinematographer and I raised $700 in Indiegogo and combined that with our own money in order to buy a full-on shooting kit that would give us the freedom to shoot whenever regardless of the renting house. |
"Our Food Our Future" First Episode
One of the biggest learning curves for me in this documentary was learning Avid. In this documentary I had already learnt how to maneuver Avid but the last issue I had was making sure that Avid managed the media well. After going through some rough time and finishing this project I asked for advice in the proper ways to import media into Avid and I got it. For my next film "The Shadow of Cancer" I finally felt like a complete master of Avid and I cruised through the editing process and finally felt free to just focus on the artistic part of creating the piece.

With Our Food Our Future we decided to make a film in which we would learn about some of the mentalities that go with making our food but we also wanted to advocate for someone who was actively doing something about this and see their journey. I used most of the same programs I used for "The Shadow of Cancer"

The Digital Divide
|
Besides working on a TV show for my internship I also worked on making a documentary for a non profit organization called Sky's the Limit. I was in charge of the whole process but I had a friend that helped me producing and over looking the entire process called Nick Lonski he was also in charge of the cinematography. Here again I'm gaining knowledge interviewing people, working with groups that are actually making social change that ties in with my central values. Also a my first chance at using a Music program that I later

Venezuelan Protest - Contacted by CNN for Authorization of Use
|
I heard that there was a Venezuelan protest in Dundas Square. On a whim and without any planing I picked up the camera my friend and I share without the microphone because he had it at the time and shot what happened. I had one night to edit this since I had a deadline to work on my Thesis and I wanted this to be out quickly and fresh. I took out Evernote and transcribed all the words and structured the event with the b-roll and quickly translated the video into English through subtitles. As a result many people shared this video and it gathered 700 views in 3 days. The second day I uploaded it CNN called me to get permission to use it to which I agreed. After the fourth day my video was blocked in Venezuela and I never got a reply back from CNN whether they ended up using it or not. The video was talked was featured in a democratic promotional website called www.dtvoficial.com and they took this video and reupload it to their own youtube channel. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMnET_uX-E0

Togetherness - Short Doc

Living and Learning - A Venezuelan Family Documentary
Living and Learning was the first self-motivated documentary I did in my life. I figured after learning to shoot documentary that I wanted to do one on my family that I hadn't seen in two years since I arrived in Canada.
With nothing but THE worst equipment: recording from a webcam-microphone and a dynamic microphone (not great economical times, international students pay double for college, just saying) and mini HD camera. It was good experience in translating English into Spanish subtitles. |
